It’s now 2017. The beauty of a brand new year is that the potential is infinite. Your potential is infinite. Will you travel more? Will you get more sleep? Will you learn a new language? Will you put yourself out there and try things that would normally be outside of your comfort zone? Will you call your friends and family more often? Will you finally stick to that diet/exercise/budget plan that has been haunting you for years?
I truly believe that the wonder and newness of January is what makes every year truly worth remembering. After all, this is the time in ever year of your life that your slate is wiped clean, that your optimism is at full, and that even you feel like anything is truly possible.
As a ballroom dancer, this the perfect time of year to acknowledge all that I’ve accomplished, and to look excitedly to my future. I have a full years worth of learning, of accomplishments, of breaking my own barriers and boundaries, of meeting new and exciting people, and of learning what passion truly means. Dancing is the one art that not involves your creativity, but the creativity of others through the music, connection to other human beings in the physical and emotional aspect, and the beauty of movement. Dancing is not only healthy for it’s exercise qualities, but it allows you to find or loose yourself spiritually through the music. It gives someone with the weight of the world on their back time to breathe and refocus on themselves. It gives those that are lonely the opportunity to be surrounded by people and held. It provides those who typically question themselves an outlet where mistakes may actually lead to genius. Where else can you find yourself smiling, laughing, thinking, and moving all at the same time!
Yes, the new year brings time for something new. This year, try ballroom dancing as that new thing. I promise that you won’t regret it. After all, even if a few lessons later you decide that it isn’t for you, you will always have a new skill that can one day (or perhaps one year) come in handy.
