TYPES OF PROGRAMS AND MEDALIST STANDARDS
OF THE ARTHUR MURRAY DANCE SCHOOLS
Foundation
This program is designed as an introduction to a few basic dances. Emphasis is placed on the three most important elements of dancing: pattern, timing, and lead/follow. This foundation program gives your instructor an opportunity to take care of your immediate dancing needs and evaluate your future ones.
Bronze
This program is the basic social standard. It will develop free movement around the floor, more variety, technique, footwork and your first introduction to styling. Your confidence and experience on the dance floor makes moving to music effortless and natural. Dancing at this level makes it permanent – you will never forget the elements of each dance. You won’t be thinking about anything but enjoying the dance, the music and your partner.
Silver
Silver is the dance standard that demonstrates truly excellent technique and styling. Advanced patterns make this level stand out on the dance floor. Continuity of movement enables a couple to glide around the dance floor with many changes of direction. Silver dancers are able to express rhythm though internal body movements and isolations. At this point dancing has become more than a hobby.
Gold
Our Gold standard is for the stars! This level of dancing is for the person who wants to compete and/or perform exhibitions. Choreography, styling, technique and showmanship are necessities in this standard. The smoothness and control make Gold dancers wonderful to watch. The Gold program is the equivalent to a black belt in karate. You are a master of all social dances as well as an outstanding competitor and performer.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to learn how to dance?
~ Learning to dance is a lot like learning a new language. The best way, and the fastest way to learn it is through complete immersion. Remember to give yourself time, and enjoy the journey!
Do I need a partner?
~ Absolutely not. If you have one, fantastic. If you have one that isn’t interested, don’t press them. Dancing is a wonderful thing that you can learn with and without a partner.
I’m getting married, when should I start preparing for my first dance?
~ Planning a wedding is stressful. Use the dancing as a way to provide you and your soon-to-be spouse time together that is relaxing, stress-free, and completely about you.
We always recommend starting months in advance, but are completely willing to help you weeks in advance as well. The more time you give yourselves, the better the dance will feel and look!
Is dancing feasible for someone who works a lot, or has a house full of kids?
~ We believe that the people who tend to need the dancing the most, are the one’s who never have the time for it. The only way to ever truly be able to care for others, is to take care of yourself! If you find yourself short on me time, then this is something you will fall in love with.
What should I wear to my first dance lesson?
~ Please dress comfortable, as we will have you dancing right away. As long as your shoes are comfortable, and do not slip off of your feet, you should be just fine!
How often do I need to come in for lessons?
~ We have found that students typically come in 1-2 times per week. However, we understand that your schedules are important and tend to be full. We will work with you to find the best way to get the full benefit of dancing with us.
What dances to you teach?
~ We teach over 30 different dances. Everything from Fox Trot, to Swing, to Country 2-Step, to Salsa. It is all partner dancing. If you have a specific dance request, please let us know.
